Time To “Boil In A Bag” For Dinner!
It was a simpler time, right? I mean, these retro ads for “cookin’ bag” foods are something!
After all, who doesn’t want a freshly boiled turkey sandwich?

Well, those were the days, right?
WRONG!
In a world when so many people think they are just too busy to cook a meal, we have popular new “home delivery” foods – that are basically “boil in a bag” offerings like this:

Prepared food that are sealed in a bag and just need to be “boiled” to perfection! And these aren’t “TV dinner” quality meals of the past, they are great meals pre-prepared for busy people!
So I decided to do some boiling in a bag to see how it would turn out:

It all began when I ordered these terrific Mila ground pork noodles…frozen and ready to bring to life via “boil in a bag”!

First, I sautéed garlic and roasted corn in some sesame oil…after cooking for a few minutes, it was now time to make my “boil in a bag” dish….boil as instructed then just add it to your garlic corn mix – as in this short video where it all comes together so easily:

There is is, just put it in a bowl and you have a delicious and easy bowl of ground pork noodles!

You can serve this alongside a salad, or even something like pork won tons or potstickers…or just have it as a filling meal on its own!

It’s important to remember that boiling food in hot water is an acceptable cooking practice – in fact, did you know you can make lasagna – and salmon – in your dishwasher?

See, you just bag it up and let the heat and moisture do the cooking!

I am always willing to try something different: like using “cup noodles” in a greatly expanded way like this:

I took a “seafood” flavored cup noodles and bolstered it into a terrific meal – see it here:
I love food – even when it’s fake!

I mean, for a “retro” food ad, it looks pretty good!

I enjoy trying classic dishes – like this one from the American revolution!

Yes, I cooked with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson too!
See what I cooked here:
And I also went to a “retro” restaurant that served their version of “Spaghetti-O’s!”

Hollywood has a great history with food, like this chili that Elizabeth Taylor loved:

It’s classic, delicious and fun to make at home – click here for the recipe!

I like the ramen hack wth seafood, and the boiled noodle hack with veggies. not so much the banquet, and I love that retro dad!
I remember ‘Boil in the bag’ foods becoming popular in the early 1960s. My mum worked full time, so she liked the convenience of that midweek. Here’s a short article about the changes happening back then in Britain. Best wishes, Pete.

Hi John, an entertaining article. I remember boil in a bag being mentioned. It is familiar. Did you check the ingredients? Are there a lot of preservatives in the modern meals?
Robbie, the modern day “meal in a bag” items are much healthier – made fresh, never frozen and far fewer additives as a result…of course, you have to keep a close eye on it to be sure and expect to pay more…for the most part, I will cook myself with only fresh ingredients!
One of my Scottish cookbooks has a recipe in there for dishwasher salmon. Re the minced pork, though, did you miss the caramelisation you get from frying it?
