Have You Heard Of Buffalo Chicken Wing Cupcakes?
I scour the internet for interesting food mashups and this may be one of the most unique!
I discovered these once, and never realized just how popular they are – because there are recipes and photos everywhere!
Congrats to the Creator of this unique dish, which has become a staple of the greatest mashup food dishes of all time….
Here’s how it was described online:
“Not just a plain vanilla cupcake with a buffalo chicken wing plopped on top like it may seem at first, the above buffalo chicken wing cupcake contains hot sauce and blue cheese in the cake, and a blue cheese butter cream frosting.”
Thanks to “Cupcake Project” for this recipe:
Yield: 10 cupcakes
For the cake:
1/2 cup hot sauce (I recommend a hot sauce that is typically used for Buffalo chicken. Frank’s is the classic choice. I used Bella’s Medium Wing Sauce.)
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons sour cream
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
For the blue cheese butter cream frosting:
2 ounces crumbled blue cheese
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups powdered sugar
To make the cupcakes:
Preheat oven to 350 F.
In a medium-sized saucepan on medium-high heat, heat hot sauce and butter until butter is melted.
Add the blue cheese and mix periodically until blue cheese is melted.
Remove from heat and mix in the sugar.
In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream and egg.
Once the hot sauce mixture is cool enough to touch, mix the sour cream mixture into the hot sauce mixture.
In another small bowl, mix together the flour and baking soda.
Fold the flour mixture into the hot sauce mixture.
Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full.
Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
To make the blue cheese butter cream frosting:
Mix blue cheese on high speed until smooth.
Add the unsalted butter and mix on high speed until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
Slowly mix in the powdered sugar until fully combined.
Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes.
The best part of this recipe is what they say at the end of the entire process:
“Once everything is completed, slap the chicken wing on top of the cupcake, and proceed to gross out your guests.”
Bravo to Cupcake Project via Neatorama – what a mashup to try!
Speaking of mashups, would you try this one?
Would you eat an ice cream cheeseburger?
I would!
Here are some more wild mashups using ice cream!
I also did a homemade mashup when I had two leftovers dishes:
Yes, I made a “pizza lasagna” and it turned out well!

you know what, I would! and I may make these for my grandson’s upcoming birthday, as chicken wings are his fav food in the universe
That’s a great idea, Beth. Do share a picture.
A most interesting food idea, John. It makes sense that the flavour of the cupcake would complement the buffalo wings.
Wow..Love it! Unique and would definitely try this…
Unique indeed! Thanks for sharing!
You are most welcome, John 🙂
I dunno. I’m from Buffalo & I’ve eaten my weight in chicken wings. I’ll try anything, though …
HA! I really don’t know why this is so popular but there are a ton of photos and recipes celebrating this! Thanks for commenting!
I never understood why people ate chicken wings. They have virtually no meat on them, and are hardly worth the effort of cooking them. I take the little bones out of them and give the rest to Ollie. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Lucky Ollie I bet he loves that…x
Pete, they are incredibly popular here, but you are right…mostly skin and bone!
This is interesting. I’ve had savory cupcakes before. Not this one, though. I notice that nowhere do you actually say you enjoy eating these buffalo wing cupcakes. Do you? Because I’m kind of curious about them!
I shared this as a “wow look at these” recipe than something I would make…that said, I would try one to see if the sweet and spicy combo worked!
