My “Blue French Burger” Review From Paris! The Captivating Ad vs. My Culinary Reality!

The “French Burgers” Are Here – In Paris At Least!

When my wife Alex and I were in Paris at the end of July, she worked during the day, leaving me to wander the streets and discover new things to eat – like a blue burger!

The French hamburger chain Quick had a special menu for the Olympics, with three colorful new burgers to try!

On the left is the “French Burger” with bleu cheese sauce – while the middle was the “French Burger” with dijon mustard sauce – and the right was of course a “French Burger” with Espelette Pepper sauce! Let;s hit the famous Champs Elyse to find our “French” food!

Once inside, you are greeted by ordering towers, where you pick your burger, side dish and drink…

I chose the bleu cheese burger with large cheddar fires and extra mayonnaise…as you can see the prices was just over 12 euros, so about $13 – and by the way, this is the last time I was able to film inside as I was told by a security guard that it wasn’t allowed!

Well, once they delivered my order, I surreptitiously took photos in order to review my food – which as you can see came nicely wrapped with the extra mayo packets as well.

So there it sat, wrapped and ready for me…before I open it, let’s take a look at the ad for the burgers again:

As you can see for the bleu cheese burger, hints of sauce sneak out a bright blue bun with meat, slices of cheese, tomato and lettuce stacked nicely in toasty symmetry. That’s the ad. Here is the reality of what I unwrapped:

The title of this post was “captivating ad vs. culinary reality” and this is why: this has a fleeting resemblance to the burger promoted in the ad. First of all, the “bright blue” bun was a bit dreary and closing in on grey:

The lettuce wasn’t piled high, there was no cheese or sauce on the bottom, and no tomato either!

Here’s what it looked like when I lifted the bun:

As you saw, it didn’t come very close to the ad – on the other hand, the cheesy fries looked great!

These were delicious: crispy on the outside, nice and hot and creamy inside, with a zesty cheese sauce – because of course it’s France so they make cheese with flavor!

And as for the burger itself, I set my phone up against my drink and shot a quick taste test before anyone caught me – yes, YouTube captured a really horrible shot of me eating but don’t worry, it doesn’t last long:

In the video you can see that there actually WAS a slice of tomato on the burger, but it has been covered by the sticky cheesy sauce!

And as you heard, I actually enjoyed the flavor of the burger a lot – and the inside of the bun had much better “blueness”, so while the reality of what I was served didn’t measure up to the advertisement – it was pretty good – a solid “B” grade!

I ate a lot of great French food when I was in Paris, like this pig’s trotter at the classic restaurant Au Pied de Cochon – see how it tasted here:

Of course, my favorite dish of all is this potato pie:

Or maybe a potato cake – either way, it’s from a classic Paris bistro – but click here for the recipe for making it at home – it’s incredible!

  1. This is fun, John. Cheese on chips would be a bit much for me.

  2. Another fun and quirky burger, John…for me cheese and chips are a no no I just like salt and vinegar the English way…

    • Carol, here in the US, they load up fries with everything! Almost to the point you can’t taste them which is probably a good thing as so many of them over here are lifeless and devoid of flavor

  3. I don’t mind toppings sometimes but in moderation although as you say it hides the taste 🙂

  4. That looked like a very odd burger. But glad it tasted better than it looked. The cheesy fries looked nice

  5. I wouldn’t have had the blue burger, as I am not fond of blue cheese and the blue bun looks ‘wrong’. I would have chosen the dijon mustard burger, and probably plain fries. (Though cheesy fries are popular in the UK) Thanks, John.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thanks for the note Pete! Yes, while the bun didn’t really have any distinctive flavor, the color was certainly not what was promised in the ad, and I agree the dijon burger ouwld have been nice! Their fries were good as well! Cheers!~

  6. I’m surprised the French would do something like that! And by the way, I’m taking my daughter and grand daughter to Paris. Any recommendations on nice hotels in a wonderful area? I don’t like the crazy “modern” boutique hotels with plastic chairs…

    • It was their Quik burger chain and it was done to celebrate the Olympics. a red burger, a white burger and a bleu burger…it tasted fine but was a bit f a hot mess! Thanks for the comment always great to hear from you!
