Have You Tried “Vertical Lasagna?” Don Angie’s Iconic Dish Reviewed!

Who Wants A Bite Of “Vertical Lasagna?”

As you all know by now, I love food, I love unique preparations and flavors, and this ranks as one of my favorite dishes of all time – because it’s bakes Lasagna served vertically!

Let head to Restaurant Don Angie in New York for the story!

Don Angie is a critically acclaimed Italian-American restaurant from Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli.

The restaurant is located in New York’s West Village and had gotten a lot of acclaim, such as being named one of Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America in 2018. Scott and Angie earned nominations from the James Beard Foundation in 2019, 2020 and 2022. In May 2021, Don Angie was awarded a Michelin star. Scott and Angie are also co-authors of a cookbook called “Italian American.”

We headed there with one thing in mind: their iconic “vertical Lasagna!”

But before we ate, we drank:

It was began with drinks, as you can see the menu above – all unique and delicious!

First, here is the Margherita:

Here’s the Bloody Mario, and I ordered the very happily named “The Italian Coffee Situation!”

It’s their take on the very popular Espresso Martini…

Drinks in hand, it was time to dive into the menu!

There are a number of signature dishes, starting with the stuffed garlic flatbread, which is rich and chewy and perfect for the table to share:

Just how cheesy was it? This cheesy!

By the way, before we could eat, we all had to grab out pictures, and that is what my wife Alex on the left and our close friend Yvette did!

As for the salads, I ordered their famous Chrysanthemum Salad….with a snowfall of parmesan…but my picture was blurry! So this shot came from The Infatuation’s terrific review of the restaurant…that website is a “must read” for all food lovers!

We also got their special radicchio with blood orange salad which was terrific as well – refreshing with a nice kick to it!

Now, onto the main courses:

This was the Shell Steak al Limone, served with charred and cured lemons! It gave a delicious bit of tang to the steak, which was beautifully cooked medium rare…then our side dish of charred broccoli was set down as well…topped with pecorino cheese and toasted sesame….

And now, without further ado, we all he’d our breath as the main course was presented to us!

Behold “Our Lasagna” – Don Angie’s Iconic “Vertical Lasagna!”

I mean, at its simplest, that’s what they have done: turned a traditional Lasagna “on its side” so to speak, then gave it a nice twirl and baked it!

The presentation is a visual feast, and a showstopper indeed!

And talk about cheesy!

I can only describe it as tasting like Lasagna – if every bite had more rich tomato and cheese flavor than you could imagine!

As Seth Rogan says about a cheeseburger in the film “This Is The End”:

No room for dessert but they have great ones as well…Don Angie is one of the toughest reservations in New York and for good reason – but let me add that they are the nicest people as well!

And guess what? We had a little leftover and it re-heated the next day to perfection, with two slices of parmesan bread included!

It reminds me just how much I love Lasagna, and I make it often!

I followed the recipe of a great Chef, who made his Mom’s Lasagna – and so did I!

Life is a food adventure to be sure – like the time we ate a traditional “Bistecca” in Florence Italy!

The preparations nd presentation is amazing – click here to see video of our table side carving!

My goal is to share recipes, food stories, and cool food that I taste around the world – or in this case, wine I tasted through a tiny window!

  1. The food looks amazing! I love the look of those salads and the vertical lasagne. Who would have thought.

    • Darlene, it’s one of the toughest reservations to get for a reason – they are all so nice there, the service is terrific and the food is really delicious…literally everyone who goes there gets the vertical lasagna but there is so much else that is delicious as well – thanks for the comment!

  2. I’ve never tried it, but certainly want to after seeing this

  3. I haven’t made lasagna for ages. I must do so again soon. This vertical version looks interesting. I don’t like cooking the flat lasagna, it is always a pain. The other dishes look delicious.

    • Robbie, my cheat is using dried lasagna that is much thinner so you don’t pre-cook at all, just load up your ingredients, layer them, and put it in the oven, the noodles fully cook and no messy pre-cook needed for me! Thanks as always for your comments and support!

  4. It all looks delicious a cheese lovers delight…and another way to make lasagna looks good, John..my fav the garlic bread 🙂

    • Carol, while I highlighted the cheese, I have to make sure people know that the balance of cheese to sauce and noodle was correct, and you are right that garlic bread they put it to keep the lasagna looking good and upright in the container was delicious! Thanks for the comment, always great hearing from you! Will be cooking from your cookbook soon and sharing!
