A “Leftover Tale Of Crab…” Making “Crab Cake” Fried Rice!

Who Loves Crab Fried Rice?

Well, I do, my wife Alex does, and you should too!

But what happens when we had some of the incredibly delicious dish leftover from our recent meal at the outstanding “Fish Cheeks” in New York’s “NoHo” district?

A quick aside: Fish Cheeks is a GREAT Thai restaurant, and it sits just down the street from perhaps the coolest expression of outside wall art I’ve seen!

Their entire menu is incredible, but a special shoutout to their crab curry:

Oh yes, there was a bit of that left over, which we took as well..but here’s how the crab fried rice looks when delivered at your table:

So when we had a healthy amount of leftover fried rice, I thought about how to bolster it: with this?

With fresh crab? The problem is, it is sold by the pound and I didn’t want to use that much, or have it leftover again…and then I remembered:

Three golden crab cakes garnished with herbs, served with lemon wedges, coleslaw, and a small bowl of dipping sauce on a beige plate

Crab Cakes!

A local grocery near me sells pre-made crab cakes individually – each about 4 ounces – so I bought two and decided to do a “leftover tale” of crab!

Here’s what I did…

First, I cooked a bit of garlic and diced onion in olive oil AND Sesame Seed Oil…just to give it a bit more personality!

Next, I crumbled the crab cakes into the pan, added some of my own leftover jasmine rice, then added the leftover crab fried rice and stirred…I decided at the last minute to film it so it’s a mess but so what:

Next, I diced some green onion – the white and light green part:

Then, I just brought it all together:

So quick and easy, and it maintained the rich crab flavor of the original dish….but crab cakes added some real nice flavors as well….

I always try to use leftovers so food doesn’t go to waste – but we also really don’t like eating the exact same food two days in a row, so modifying a bit really helps.

Remember when I had leftover white rice?

See what I did with it here…

And probably my most egregious “leftover tale” was then I made this:

Yes, it’s “pizza lasagna!”

See how I did it, and more importantly, why I bothered!

And my best “leftover tale” involved 14 styrofoam containers of leftover food:

  1. Hi John, I’ve only cooked with crab one as it’s not easy to get in Johannesburg. Your fish sounds innovative and fun.
