Who Wants A “Butter Burger?” I Taste Test Culver’s ButterBurgers + Fish Sandwich Too!

I Bite Into Culver’s For The First Time!

My brother-in-law and wife live in Ohio, and they kept telling me about a burger chain there I should check out – Culver’s! Here’s why:

Culver’s ButterBurgers are the signature fast-food menu staple of the Midwest-based Culver’s chain, famous for using fresh, never-frozen beef that is pressed, seared to order, and served on a lightly buttered, toasted bun. Contrary to popular misconceptions, the beef is not marinated, injected, or cooked in pools of butter; instead, real Wisconsin butter is applied strictly to the crown of the bun.

As the company states:

“The butter we use on our buns also comes from right here in Wisconsin, crafted by our friends at Alcam Creamery, a small, family-owned creamery less than an hour outside our home in Sauk City.”

There are now more than 900 Culver’s across the US. And thanks to Derek and Cherie, I ate at one in Ohio!

I perused the menu board with two goals: to try the original Butterburger, and to also try their North Atlantic Cod Fish Sandwich, so I ordered both!

I ordered the Butterburger with Cheese – the “Deluxe”, which is described this way:

“We start with fresh, never frozen beef. Layer on real Wisconsin cheese, crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, pickles, sweet red onion and our signature mayo. Then cap with a lightly buttered, toasted bun. It’s our ButterBurger® at its best.”

Here’s a closer look:

First and foremost, you really do taste the butter on the bun, slightly toasted – it provides a nice crunch! I like the toppings and the cheese is rich and delicious as well.

There’s a great mouthfeel to the burger: I actually think that by having the cheese not fully melted, it gives it more distinct flavor and texture – the other topping are fine, just the right amount of each, letting the purge shine.

I added an order of onion rings as well, and they came out crispy on the outside but nicely soft on the inside – well done!

Next, it was on to the fish sandwich!

As Culver’s describes it:

“Caught in the icy North Atlantic, our fish is hand cut, hand battered and cooked to order. Topped with a Culver’s family recipe tartar sauce featuring olives, capers and sweet relish, crisp lettuce and Wisconsin Cheddar. Served on a lightly buttered, toasted hoagie roll. “

Let’s take a look:

As you can see, the cheese is diced and sits underneath this massive piece of fish – which was crunchy on the outside and steamy, hot and moist on the inside…a really delicious – and filling fish sandwich!

I also took home one double ButterBurger with cheese – not a deluxe, and it played very much like a Smashburger!

Take a look:

Here’s a look at it cut open:

Meat and cheese on a buttered bun – and it works!

I love regional burger chains, and I’m glad to have had the chance to try Culver’s…we have a regional chain in Seattle that is iconic as well!!

Dick’s Drive-In has been around for more than than 60 years, serving nothing but three different burger, fries and shakes.

I love getting a “bag of Dicks” like this:

Here’s a closer look at the hamburger chain, and a local pub that decided to pay homage to their “Dick’s Deluxe!”

I also tried the newest burger from McDonald’s – their “Big Arch!”

Here is my review:

Because it’s “National Burger Month”, I spent time with the legendary George Motz, Burger Historian and owner/Chef of Hamburger America:

George made me a terrific fried onion burger – here’s my review!
