Bite Down On These Sea Cucumbers – Recipes For The Ultimate “Halloween Nightmare” Food!

Time To Bite Down On Halloween!

First of all, I love this platter of food with a Halloween theme…a nice charcuterie platter – with what appears to be folded salami as intestines!

It’s the time when everyone shares their own wacky food ideas like this:

It’s all cute and fun, and then my blogging friend Carole shared a food item that she had a question about: would you ever cook it?

What was so polarizing that she had to ask that question?

Ummmmm……THIS!

It was fitting that during this Halloween season, a food item like this would turn any “treat” into a “trick!”

It’s a Sea Cucumber, and it may be the most off-putting food item I’ve ever seen!

And it gets worse as Carole notes:

“Sea cucumbers or “Sea rats” as they are aptly nicknamed by some fishers and divers because of how they move and feed—slowly crawling over the seabed, cleaning up waste and debris like rats rummaging. through scraps on land.”

Yep, they are also known as “SEA RATS!”

Here it is braised…but I’m not sure how any preparation can make it look more edible…but it’s fascinating to read about: Carole discusses its history, and how it is used in recipes…I loved her story and you will too when you head over to her terrific website for some recipes that actually use this off-putting ingredient!

If you are having a Halloween party, but can’t get your hands on a few dozen Sea Cucumbers, don’t forget there are plenty of other Halloween snacks for your guests – like this!

Well, perhaps it tastes better than it looks – but it is just Guacamole – they do say we “eat with our eyes” however!

I love some of the more outrageous food ideas being shared right now like this!

Perfectly edible rice Krispy treats have been transformed into hilariously inappropriate snacks! See more of them here:

Remember that there is very strange food around us all year long – if you choose to look for it!

Imagine grocery shopping and finding this on aisle 12:

Yep, you can get “Armadillo Meat In A Can!”

And there is so much more, including a “Cheeseburger In A Can” that I ate!

See my taste test here!

Happy Halloween!

  1. my mother used to scuba dive and collect sea cucumbers from the Puget Sound for Mrs. Chin, in exchange for Chinese cooking classes! I tasted one once but I’m sure I spat it out!!!

  2. love, love the platters, and people are so incredibly creative !

  3. I don’t know John, I think I might pass on even tasting the sea rats! But I recognize that might be a mistake.

    • You know what Dorothy, I think I agree! I think whatever recipes uses them compensates by adding a LOT of other flavors, really diminishing the need to use them at all! That said, the post about their history was fascinating to me! Thanks for the comment!

  4. Wow, some really crazy stuff! I think I might have to pass on those sea rats.

  5. Well, I have learned something new again – shall look up the sea cucumbers > have not heard of such our way. BUT – of your recent Halloween food photos the one which truly has ‘upset’ all the ones who have seen it of my pages is that guacamole one . . .. one’s eyes truly see it as ‘vile’ 🙂 !

  6. Thanks, John. Nothing on earth would perusuade me to eat one. the thought of eating scattered skunk is even more daunting than the sea cucumber

  7. Sea Cucumbers? It’s a firm ‘No’ from me, John. 🥒

    Best wishes, Pete.
