Katz’s Chaos! Why The New York Post Is Attacking This Iconic Deli!

Who Knew This Sandwich Could Be So Controversial?

But that’s the world we live in: Katz’s Deli in New York has come under attack – for this sandwich!

Behold A Katz Classic!

Take some time to feast your eyes on a legendary sandwich: the Pastrami on Rye from Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City!

Now that I live in New York, I love to take a long walk to New York’s lower east side for a legendary meal here…

This place has quite a history – this is from their website:

“In 1888, a small deli by the name of Iceland Brothers was established on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side by the Iceland brothers. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the name of the store was officially changed to “Iceland & Katz”. Willy’s cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the Iceland brothers to officially form Katz’s Delicatessen. Their landsman Harry Tarowsky bought into the partnership in April 1917. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street, to its present location, during the construction of the subway system. The vacant lot on Houston Street (pronounced “House-ton” after a Dutch emigrant of the same name) was home to barrels of meat and pickles until the present storefront facade was added between 1946-49.”

So, what’s going on now? Well, the New York Post decided to start a fight with Katz’s, using a customer complaint about the price of the food!

It began when the Post shared a customer complaint, which called the food “over-rated”…now, as I have eaten here several times, there are two points to make: first, it is NOT over-rated!

Eating at Katz’s Deli is a great New York deli experience: you go up to your own “carver”, who builds you a massively sized sandwich using fresh pastrami or corned beef – or any sandwich you want from their massive menu!

The Post is using this person’s complaint about the prices to create a controversy – but the food is delicious – but the article also attacks the deli for their prices! Here is the sandwich I order every time:

Is it close to $30? Yes. But two points to make: first, it will last you two meals at least: it’s massive! Second, I walked into a small deli in midtown Manhattan last week – their pastrami sandwich was the same price…that’s the cost of a deli sandwich in New York – so why pick on Katz’s? An easy answer: for clicks!

While I hate to promote them, here is the link to the story if you want to read it all – but they are wrong!

  1. I was going to say, I’m sure that’s the going rate for any nyc deli sandwich, and it’s at least two meals, and Katz’s is great! I’d ignore the diss

  2. Our last trip into Manhattan, I easily spent $30 for lunch and barely got anything. I was still hungry, but that’s just NYC prices. But like your pix shows, that’s enough for two or even three meals. For NY, that’s a deal.

    • The Post is clearly doing it for clickbait – to pull one person’s complaint and blow it up like that…Katz’s is terrific and as you say, those are the prices but at least they give you a ton of meat for the price.

      • Before you told how much . . . I made a guess in my head about how much I would think would be reasonable. Considering it’s NYC, the tourist factor, the reputation, etc, I hoped it would be in the $15 to $30 range. Figured it could easily be more. Yes, the Post trying to create animosity, get people to take sides. Ugh.

  3. Okay, I get that $30 sounds a lot for a sandwich. But then you see the sandwich! In big cities, life is expensive, but as far as I am concerned, the $30 Katz pastrami sandwich is actually value for money! I really want to eat one now.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, The Post is notorious for clickbait stories and this is one…it’s a classic NY deli and that’s the price point, but that sandwich is a minimum of two meals, so dig in I say! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi John, I think the old saying applies “you get what you pay for.” Thanks for this post.
