Here’s A Hearty & Healthy Turkey Chili Recipe – With A “Secret” Ingredient! It’s The BKD Cookbook Club…

Who Wants To Be “Deliciously” Healthy On A Cold Winter’s Day?

As I type this on my computer, let’s go outside for a moment, when I shot this video in New York’s Central Park:

Yes, it’s cold here!

Jo at the BKD Cookbook club pointed out that while she enjoys summer in Australia, some of us are in the depths of winter…so she asked us all to contribute a recipe that celebrates the weather wherever you are…I chose to make a hearty Turkey Chili for a cold winter day – that is also healthy as well – and has a “secret ingredient!”

My wife Alex loves this Turkey Chili recipe from the Weight Watchers Cookbook her Mom shared with her and I’ve made it for her many times since!

So, let’s get this out of the way: what exactly is this “secret ingredient” I keep teasing?

Here’s your answer:

Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning Mix!

There it is: if you know and love Hidden Valley’s ranch dressing in a bottle, you will also love their powdered recipe mix!

Let’s get cooking to see how it all comes together:

The Magic Of “Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing And Seasoning Mix!”

This recipe is filled with healthy ingredients, but is hearty and deliciously filling as well.

Here is your list of ingredients for this dish:

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, diced – I use a dozen for extra pop!
  • 15 oz can diced, fire-roasted tomatoes
  • 1 diced carrot, or any number of “baby” carrots
  • 1 each (16 oz) can of pinto and kidney beans
  • 1 pkg taco seasoning
  • 1 pkg Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix – pour it all in!
  • kernel corn if you like that
  • I cup vegetable or chicken stock

First, up time to make the base:

Saute the diced onion for a few minutes with salt and pepper…then add your garlic and carrots as well.

After a ten minute saute, add the ground Turkey and cook it for 10-15 minutes, stirring often…here’s a Quick Look at the process as I add the rest of the ingredients:

As you saw, you add the two kinds of beans, the corn, the taco mix and the “secret ingredient” – stir it all together, and then let everything simmer nicely on the stove over medium- low heat for about a half hour…as it cooks, make some fresh diced onions, shredded low-fat cheddar cheese, low-fat sour cream and diced avocado so they are ready to use as toppings…take a look:

And here it is, a delicious, healthy and hearty Turkey Chili that you can enjoy without guilt on a cold winter day…

I really load mine up with onion, avocado and sour cream, as well as shredded cheese…it’s a meal in a bowl!

I really do love this dish, which is full of flavor not calories…once again, a short video showing the entire process

I love Chili, so of course I had to make the recipe that Elizabeth Taylor loved so much:

The Actress used to have Chasen’s chili flown form Hollywood to whatever film set she was on – and it’s worth it!

Here’s the recipe I made:

I love cooking through Hollywood’s culinary history – I did just that when I paid homage to Musso & Frank, Hollywood’s oldest restaurant!

  1. A super addition to this month’s cookbook club. Chilli is perfect for those cold February days.

  2. Yum!! Great choice. Chili is perfect for a cold winter day!

  3. Chilli is perfect on a cold day, so great choice. And this one sounds healthy too. Ranch dressing isn’t a massive thing here, so I googled what’s in the spice mix and that’s doable. Thanks for linking this one up.

  4. Sounds delicious!
Chili is all about the toppings in my book!

  5. yummm! I really love chili and I use a ranch packet in a white chili once and it was excellent

  6. Hi John. I love chilling, I’ll have to see if there is a local substitute for the dressing mix.

  7. Looks like a great recipe for chili! Saving it for later!

  8. the first time and place my hubby saw snow was actually in Central Park! A long way from home and sunny Queensland. I do like a turkey mince recipe!

    • Interesting about the snow, as we also live in Los Angeles, which has never had it! You must drive a bit to get to it, so when there was a highly unusual “dusting” a couple of years back it confused everyone! Thanks for the note!

  9. Looks tasty to me. I would eat turkey chili!

    Best wishes, Pete.

  10. Chilli is always a great dish to have a few combinations of!
