Nothing Says Merry Christmas Like a Hot Dog Holiday Tree!
I love the internet, for this holiday season it has bestowed the hallowed “hot dog holiday tree”! And that’s not all, how about a Christmas tree fashioned out of TUNA FISH!?!?!?

OK, I know you think that is a joke, but it’s not – I mean, I FOUND IT ON THE INTERNET SO IT MUST BE TRUE….LIKE THIS:

A PICKLE TREE!
I did an investigative search online and found so many wacky food ideas from the past – yes a multi-colored pickle tree, so how about this helpful recipe for green olives to cover a “cheese and pimento porcupine?”

You see, there are so many unique ways to feed your family this holiday season – and I love these amazingly retro ideas like “almonds in a haystack”:

Oh, that’s a “terrine of garden vegetables right next to it…yum! I love how the closeup photo was captioned!

And speaking of unique uses of vegetables, how about greens beans and a meatloaf bundt?

Yes, that looks disgusting, but it was a real, honest effort for a company to encourage you to use their canned products for a festive meal – this product is for those who just don’t want to be bothered:

A Christmas “Dinner“ – Er, “Tinner!”
Is it real or not? Well, that’s been debated among social media sleuths for years…click here to see what I discovered:
I think this is close to brilliant perfection, but what if it gave you a toothache? Well, in the past there was a simple, easy answer to your pain:
COCAINE!

Well, that was clearly a “simpler time”, wasn’t it? I want to thank The Huffington Post for their great story of retro holiday foods – see more classic pics here:
All joking aside, the holiday season is a time for special treats like this one:

Click here for a terrific “Tom and Jerry” recipe!
And don’t forget, celebrities love holiday food as well!
Yes, Mrs. Damon Runyon was shilling a hot dog dinner that included diced carrots in onion cups!
She wasn’t alone, lots of celebrities have extolled the virtues of cigarettes as a holiday gift as well!

See more of this wackiness here:
Of course, you may want to serve good food this holiday season, and I have you covered for that as well:

Here is a “Gigot D’Agneau” – a Provencal leg of lamb recipe! Check it out here:
So you can eat Provencal – or you can have a hot dog tree!

Os I made the hot dog holiday tree for our family Christmas, inspired by your post last year. This year, a charcuter-tree and a cheese pinecone
I love that! Retro food is goofy fun and speaks to a bygone era to be sure…I may need to make a Tuna Mold!
Wha at fun post…I love a bit of retro… and that potato cake is calling me again….
I make that so often its a cliche – a delicious one!
All fun! I like the porcupine the best.
I may make a few of these just to feel like I’m living in 1954! Thanks for the comment!
John, these retro holiday recipes bring back memories! My mom used to make many of them. Everyone loved her salmon mousse in a fish-shaped copper mold. I had to help hold the serving tray still while she tried to coax the salmon mousse out from the mold in one piece. It had sliced olives for the eyes, red pimento pepper for the mouth and was surrounded by shredded lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Did you ever see a smiling salmon? I didn’t see a recipe featuring sliced boiled eggs! Green Jello with boiled egg slices and Velveeta cheese cubes was Dad’s favorite. Every holiday dinner or party this concoction appeared. No holiday would be complete without Lemon Jello with cottage cheese, canned pineapple and mini marshmallows. This was mixed together, poured into several loaf pans and refrigerated several hours so Mom could cut it in perfect slices. Lemon Jello slices were always served on a “bed” of leaf lettuce. She used a Christmas tree copper mold to fill with Pimento cheese. A layer of Miracle Whip was spread on top of the pimento cheese, then sprinkled with chopped nuts. Instead of making a tree with pickles like Alice Anderson, my Mom made Pickle Jello in her Bundt pan. Dill pickle slices, tiny sweet pickles plus chopped canned pimento were suspended in Orange gelatin. Again, I was the plate holder. That one was tricky because you had to dip a knife in hot water and run it around the inside of the pan to slightly loosen the gelatin from the side of the mold. Sliced boiled eggs were arranged around the Bundt Pickle Jello. The center was filled with hot pepper relish. I almost forgot ham salad shaped into a “ham”. Coated with Miracle Whip and crispy bacon bits made the ham loaf wonderful. We went crazy with that Miracle Whip!
I think I’ll look online for one of those set of copper molds in different shapes. Tupperware had great gelatin molds also. I love retro. I would eat the Christmas dinner in a tin can if I had to and I was very hungry.I really enjoyed your Retro Holiday post.
Merry Christmas!
