“X” Marks The “In-N-Out” Spot! How A Wacky Film Inspired Their Design – And Look At These BURGERS!

In-N-Out Marks The “Palm Tree” Spot!

First, thanks to “Muge at the California Forever FB page…this was posted the other day:

I just learned this – most In-N-Out Burger locations feature two palm trees grown to form an X, because the chain’s founder, Harry Snyder, was a huge fan of one of my own favorite movies, the 1963 comedy classic “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” As opposed to buried cash treasure under “The Big W,” the big X is meant to mark the spot where you’ll be diggin’ up the best burgers. I happened to drive by the one on Sunset today, and there was the big X indeed!

Credit to Mark Blackwell for the photo, a shot that perfectly captures the “X”! And here is the image from the film they are paying tribute to:

In-N-Out is a burger phenomenon, with rabid fans creating lines all day long to go inside and dine or drive thru and take away….as for the In-N-Out restaurant at the top – I go to that location often, it’s just west of the iconic Hollywood High School on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood California!

In-N-Out Burger is known for several things: first, the cool red palm trees that are on their soft drink cups, evoking the “X” homage…they are also known for one of America’s best burgers:

They are known for their DELICIOUS burgers, and here’s why: the restaurant chain, all in the western US, has only a few different burgers on their menu: no chicken sandwiches, wraps, or mini-tacos – they make burgers, and burgers alone!

The “Animal Style” Burger!

Along with a great menu, In-N-Out has a “secret” as well!

This is the most well-known “secret” menu item: their “animal style” burger! It’s a patty that has been grilled with a coating of mustard, then they add pickles, and lots of grilled onions smothered in cheese and a special sauce!

It’s one of a few “secret” items that fans crave…click here to see them all!

Sorry East Coast, you’re not going to get an In-N-Out Burger any time soon. The President of the company said they have no plans to open east of the Mississippi River….the iconic hamburger chain will remain located in the western United States only.

The restaurant now has 334 locations in six states, but East Coasters, don’t complain too much, because you have a pretty spectacular chain or your own:

Behold The “Shake Shack” Burger!

While Shake Shake is expanding everywhere, it got its start in New York City, and it’s an amazing burger as well – see their original story and my review here:

Of course, you know all about these places if you’ve devoured this terrific book:

Burger Beast has all of the stories of the great hamburger chains in America – see it all here:

And Taylor’s Refresher from Napa Valley would also like to weigh in on the “America’s Best Burger” discussion:

Taylors Refresher

Here is my review of Napa’s legendary hamburger stand, as well as the story behind their epic burger battle:

  1. Thanks for the background! When I want a good laugh, one of my favorite movies is “It’s a mad, mad….” The all-star cast is worth the time spent laughing away the time. Thanks John!

  2. I’ve only had one once and loved it, and as soon as I saw the trees in your post I wondered…. )

  3. I checked online, and that chain has no plans to open any UK outlets. So I will have to imagine how they taste.

    Best wishes, Pete.
