Do You Know What A “Scotch Egg” Is?
I ask because Chef Mimi recently shared a terrific post about them, and they are seldom served here in Los Angeles – but now that I’ve seen what she’s done with them, I’m all in!
First, here is the definition: A “Scotch Egg” is a traditional British dish consisting of a shelled hard-boiled egg that is wrapped in sausage, covered in breadcrumbs, and then deep-fried or baked until crispy. It is a popular pub and picnic dish and is commonly served cold in Britain.
Here’s how Chef Mimi set up her story:
“We have eaten our way through pubs in England, Wales, Ireland, North Ireland, and Scotland, and have never been disappointed. Of course there’s fish and chips, but also fabulous fish dishes, beef Wellington, savory pies, risottos, stews, and much more.
In all those pubs in all those years, I’ve never ordered a Scotch egg. Maybe because they’re deep fried? Or maybe I didn’t really know what they were. But recently I’ve learned more about how good they really can be, and found a Nigella-recommended recipe for them, using an air fryer!”
I was hooked, and Mimi shows you how she made them step-by-step: check ti out at her website here!
I am definitely going to make these – here is the closest I have come so far in my cooking adventures:
This is an Indian “Nargisi Koftas” recipe, which is similar but different…click here to see the recipe I prepared and how they turn out:
I love to share my cooking attempts, especially when it is something I’ve never tried before.
One of my disastrous efforts was when I tried to make Chef Michael Ruhlman’s “Mollet Egg”:

Is this the way it was supposed to turn out – and can you really bread an egg while cupping it in your hand?

Want more disasters? I also attempted to make a “bacon-wrapped egg-stuffed avocado” – 🥑 How hard can that be?
Well, the laughing avocado on the left gives you an idea…click here to see the resulting “bacon foam”!

Bravo to Chef Mimi for sharing this recipe and the easy to follow directions!
If you enjoy this series, please share on social media – thanks!

aww thanks! They were really good. I love the sound of nargisi koftas. Bacon wrapped egg filled avocado?!! Wow! What an endeavor! If you want a fairly easy egg challenge, check out https://chefmimiblog.com/pumpkin-soup-with-deep-fried-eggs/
I think this would be wonderful with asparagus soup, but I’ve got too many other posts planned! Thanks for the shout out!
Scotch Eggs are a staple snack in the UK, but most sold in shops are pre-packaged, and rather dry to eat, with the eggs hard-boiled. Good ones in restaurants are a different thing entirely, especially when they still have runny yolks.
Best wishes, Pete.
