Who Wants A “Sky-High” Martini At The Grill? My Review Of New York’s Iconic Steakhouse!

Cheers!

One of the joys of living in New York City is exploring some of the 50,000+ restaurants of all shapes and sizes in the city: from the thousands of food carts that line the city streets to restaurants that are more than a hundred years old…but tonight, I am headed to one of the city’s most iconic watering holes….behold “The Grill!”

The reinvention of a classic, The Grill is the crown jewel of Manhattan’s Seagram Building and the celebrated successor to the famed Four Seasons restaurant that was one of the city’s most celebrated bars and restaurants.

The Grill is housed within the only landmarked dining room in the United States. The dining room, originally designed by Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1959, was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1989.

That’s a massive chandelier hanging above the bar – so massive it’s impossible to get an up-close shot but here’s a try:

The bar is a great spot to begin your visit, but don’t forget you have to get a mixed drink at your table as well – I will show you why!

Before we grab our drink, The Grill wants you to know this:

“Here, guests are swept into a world of midcentury splendor, where debonair service captains attend to every need, the collection of wine and spirits is without equal, and the menu presents expertly prepared dishes from the American chophouse tradition to dazzling effect.”

That’s what their beautifully designed website says, but it’s time to bite down and see for ourselves! First, order that Martini at your table, because here is how they serve it!

It’s ice cold, delicious, and that presentation is something – Alex captured me as I captured them:

After that perfect Martini pour, it was time to look at the menu. The Grill is a classic steakhouse – but with some uniquely delicious presentations:

A Potato-Topped Crab Cake!

What a way to start! There is a meaty crab cake sitting on top of tartar sauce, with a potato crust!

Very flavorful and easy to pass around so everyone can have a bite! Next up is one of the restaurant’s specialties:

Broiled Nantucket Bay Scallops!

These delicate Nantucket Bay Scallops are brought in fresh when in season, and served on the shell…delicate and sweet, a real treat when available…

Crudites – With Three Dips!

You can eat healthy here, and no better way than with this crudite bowl, stuffed with all sorts of fresh vegetables…it comes with three different dipping sauces.

Now, onto the main course, which is also a showstopper:

The signature Prime Rib is carved table side on a gleaming cart – and what a presentation! Here he is carving for us, then I will do a pan of the whole table and end as he grates fresh horseradish on top!

This is a delicious dish with a bit of au jus around the plate as well…and if you like, they will give you one of the ribs that has been roasted as a treat!

Of course, every great steakhouse must have great side dishes, and The Grill delivers on this as well:

We always get the hash browns, served perfect disc-like with a golden crust and creamy interior…topped with a delicious sweet pepper sauce…

They also serve up delicious and decadent pomme puree…there is a lot of butter and cream in this one for good reason!

We have been to The Grill a number of times, most recently for Valentine’s Day, where they gave us Oysters and Scallops with Caviar:

Main courses were a Filet Mignon with Truffles and a Monkfish Wellington in caviar cream sauce!

We don’t order desserts, so our incredible meal ended here. There. is no more impressive a place to take friends, family or dates…The Grill is expensive, but they really do step up to make every single moment memorable…you are treated like royalty here – and the vibe is festive and lively!

One other unique aspect is a private dining area called The Pool, their premiere events space situated next door to The Grill, which can accommodate 180…when it’s not in use they will let you sneak a peek!

Cheers to the grill, one of the city’s best restaurants…I recently shared a review of another of New York’s most iconic restaurants:

Welcome To Keen’s!

As part of my “oldest food in New York” series, I went to a place that has a coat of arms!

They also have 50,000 clay pipes hanging from the ceiling and the city best Mutton too!

Here’s my review:

And if you want to leave the island, head to Brooklyn for one of the city’s best pasta dishes!

These Sheep’s Milk Agnolotti are drizzled with honey and are considered one of New York’s best dishes…head to Brooklyn for my review of Lilia!

And since you are in Brooklyn, why not walk across their iconic bridge? Click here to see how easy it is to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge!

  1. This looks like a beautiful classic restaurant! I wish I enjoyed martinis.

    • I never had a mixed drink before living in Chicago – where they love their brown liquid…in New York it’s the Manhattan…I will have one and done…thanks for the note, the restaurant is really impressive!

  2. Wow I love the decor true to the era and the food and drinks like stepping into a luxury time machine, wow

  3. OMG – I don’t believe it! The ‘Four Seasons’ traditionally was always our first restaurant to visit whenever we arrived in New York and before we began with all the ‘Le’s and ‘La’s along 5th Avenue – sorry for my childish way of putting it! I just physically loved sitting along the poolside (at the time one could) and feeling I was in the ‘Big Apple’! Shall come back later to enjoy your current day description again !!!
