Want A Lemon Pizza? This Uniquely Delicious Pie Is Funke! Time To Dine In The 90210!

Lemon On Your Pizza Anyone?

Yes, that’s a closeup look at a slice of Meyer Lemon, resting comfortably on. pizza….would you eat it?

I did – and here’s my review – time to head to Beverly Hills 90210!

Funke Beverly Hills is a new – and always packed – restaurant as well as a rooftop bar…also packed and lots of fun!

The best part is that Funke is right next door to the iconic Beverly Hills gas station that has a retro yet futuristic look…Funke is a terrific addition to the dining scene here…and here’s more about Evan Funke, the Chef behind the venture::

Evan Funke is on quite a culinary roll in Los Angeles: his handmade pastas are legendary, and he owns the acclaimed Felix Trattoria in Venice along with Mother Wolf in Hollywood.

As the restaurant’s website notes: “Evan has been nominated for a James Beard award twice and is considered a master pasta maker. He has dedicated over two decades to studying and mastering Italian pasta making techniques, including learning from master sfoglina Alessandra Spisni in Bologna.”

Here’s a look at their menu:

Before I get to our main topic, here are some previous dishes we had there on a previous visit:

Misticanza Salad – a terrific mix of greens, burrata and more…refreshingly full of flavor.

The grilled Prawns are bathed in a light pesto – a rich herbal pop that compliments the seafood perfectly…and the pastas:

Tagliatelle with a rich Ragu is delicious, with shaved parmigiana romana cheese on top, and the Gnudi are little mini pillows of flavor…and all of the pastas are made on site, including in an area right in front of the tables so you can watch them do it!

OK, that’s a look at some of the dishes, but we are all here for one reason – here is a short video the restaurant shared on her Instagram page:

Meet the Lemon Pizza! What you saw made in that wood-fired pizza oven was Amalfitana Mozarella ▪︎ mozarella di bufala, meyer lemon, cipolla rossa, peperoncino, pecorino dolce, agrumato ✨️

Thinly sliced Meyer Lemon. Wood fired. That was was a first for me, and I enjoyed their promotional video, but here here’s a video of what showed up at our table:

A Lemon Wedge Of Perfection!

Well, there is nothing more to say than it was delicious! The slightly sweet, tangy Meyer Lemon slice is so thin that it whispers the tart goodness of a lemon more than yells it at you, and the cheese and slightly charred crust are a perfect match….what a terrific dish!

Well, that could have been the end of the story, except for this: we only ate half of it at dinner that night, and we left the next day for 5 days – leaving the leftover slices in our refrigerator, so when we got back I headed them up in a pan and guess what?

Perfection again! 5 days didn’t dull the flavor, it enhanced the balance of flavors…one of the best leftovers slices I’ve ever had…

I love how the Meyer Lemon looks on the pizza, holding its own!

As you can see, this is thin crust, which also keeps the balance of flavors just right…

A quick k update: two nights after we ate at Funke, they had a fire in an attic exhaust shaft….as the restaurant posted on their website:

“Thanks to the calm cooperation of everyone present, our staff and guests were evacuated swiftly and safely. Our deepest gratitude to the Beverly Hills Fire Department for their rapid response and expert handling of the situation.”

Everyone who had a reservation for the rest of the week was moved to one of their other restaurants…a classy move, and the restaurant will be open again any day now, so check in on their website.

Now, not all of the food in LA is fancy:

Sometimes all you crave is a happy hot dog! Here’s what I did at “Tail O’ The Pup!”

Check out my review here:

And since you are in Tinseltown, if you want to eat like a Movie Star, then you have to go to Hollywood’s oldest restaurant:

100+ year old Musso & Frank Grill is located on Hollywood Boulevard and is better than ever!

Terrific food and, oh wow, those Martinis…

Musso & Frank has fed Hollywood royalty for more than a century, and they are still going strong!

See my review here:

Sadly, some of the greats are now gone – I’ve shared stories about their history

Romanoff’s was THE hangout in Beverly Hills for the world’s biggest stars…here’s a look at their classic menu and more:

Finally, Chasen’s was also a Hollywood hangout:

Elizabeth Taylor loved Chasen’s Chili so much she had it flown to her weekly on location around the world when she was filming!

  1. I’m not sure about lemon on Pizza but I do like the look of those prawns.

  2. I think I’m more traditional when it comes to pizza! I could see it made sweet instead of savory, though! The prices on that menu!!!! Wow.

  3. This actually sounds amazing, I’m a big lemon fan

  4. OK! You just may have gathered I am not quite the pizza and burger fan you are for a number of reasons . . . but here you have me going back for a number of reasons. One is that I absolutely love Meyer lemons and have had a tree behind my kitchen door for much of my life . . . it IS ‘different’ but I really like the idea and would love to try!!! Somehow the pizza has an ‘elegant’ look 🙂 ! Am grinning at the Chasen’s photo . . . methinks the lady and I have been at Chasen’s on the same night more than once 🙂 !!!

  5. That looks like a quality ‘high end’ restaurant, John, and I would definitely join you with one of those lemon pizzas. (That nearby petrol station is fantastic!)

    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. You’ve give me a new pizza topping options next time I fire up my pizza oven!
