Welcome To Tokyo 2016!
I was in one of the most magical cities in the world: Tokyo, where everywhere you turn you see something like this:
I’m not sure what they are selling, but I’m buying!
I brought my wife Alex and my son Jeff to Tokyo – it was the first time for both of them, so the first thing I had to do was show them THIS:
The night lights of Tokyo are all around you – so we hit the streets of Shinjuku to see them up close, and to run into people wearing this – that’s right, I need to find out where this guy got this Cheeseburger shirt:
I also showed Alex and Jeff Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Fish Market:
The fish market its a tourist’ delight: dodge the workers carting around fresh fish to be sent around the world, and sample some yourself – so we had some breakfast sushi!
I shared a story of our filming there before they moved it a few miles away – still dong what it does, just a different location…see my story of cutting into a six thousand dollar slice of tuna here:
Onto The Eel!
Now, here is my unique Eel story.
On our first day in Tokyo, Alex wanted some Eel, so I found a terrific eel restaurant – located on the top floor of a department tore, here a dozen restaurants are located for a nice dinner after shopping!
Oh and this restaurant serves Eel and ONLY Eel!
Of course, it is so popular that you must wait outside in an “eel waiting room”…thirty chairs lined up in a large open rectangle at the entrance…I signed the wait list, and since the charts were full we stood.
The the most hilarious thing happened: when they called the next couples name, the two closest to the door got up…what a coincidence I thought…except then EVERYONE else got up and slid over two!
That’s right: when the person at the front of the line is called in, everyone slides over! It’s a “Human Heel Conveyor Belt”!
We laughed and laughed and slid and slid until we were at the front and our named was called.
Once inside, Alex read the menu carefully, and we ordered our Eel, which arrived in a beautiful lacquered bowl:
We had such a great meal of only Eel…Alex’s favorite and what a way to celebrate our first night in Tokyo!
I have shared some of our other terrific adventures in Tokyo, like when we had a great Bento Box lunch – and then after making our food the Chefs sat down and did this!
Yes, the Chefs performed for us as well!
See the whole story of this gorgeous Tokyo meal!
My son and his friend met us one night for “Okonomiyaki” – at a restaurant where you cook it yourself!
This delicious pancake dish is cooked on a hot plate at your table and you can flip it yourself!
See how you can make it at home – which I did – by clicking on my story here:
A bit more food and fun from Tokyo, you see my son befriends a Musician who worked in a bar and he played an original song for us!
This “Golden Gai” entertainment area is so much fun – see why by clicking on my story here!
“Bite! Eat! Repeat!” is filled with recipes and so much more – please sign up to follow along here:
If you enjoy this “human Eel conveyor belt” story, please share on social media – thanks!

I would be up for cooked eel like that. I had something similar in Beijing, and it was great!
Best wishes, Pete.
Pete, it’s a favorite of mine to be sure…we still need to get a trip to China on our calendar!
We love Unagi Kabayaki!
Thank you for the comment!
The eel looks delicious I would love to try that one day maybe 🙂
It’s delicious and that’s all they serve, but in a number of terrific ways! Thanks for commenting!
that is a. hilarious system! but it works -)
Yes we found it so funny but we fell in lockstep and followed the system and go tour food!
This sounds like a great meal adventure. The eel looks just like regular fish.
