Hungry?
This is a Pastrami Sandwich on Rye. It is a classic delicatessen offering, and when done well, one of my favorite sandwiches of all time.
And Manny’s in Chicago does it well indeed!
Manny’s is located in the “south loop” – while is on the southern end of the downtown area known as “the loop” – you see, Chicago has elevated trains that “loop” the downtown area! They go by right above you!
The elevated tracks are pretty cool, and the trains go by all day and night – and you take the “A” train to Roosevelt and then walk less than a mile to Manny’s!
Manny’s is a classic cafeteria and delicatessen open since 1942, and I used to take the long walk there when I lived in Chicago – just to build up an appetite for what was ahead!
Check out this video I made that captures some of what you see inside:
As you see, a classic deli – and I’ve eaten there many times and here are two of the dishes I ordered:
A Reuben On Rye!
Yes, that’s corned beef atop sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, with a potato latke on the side!
The corned beef is moist and delicious, and add some classic yellow mustard and a dill pickle slice, along with a local beer, and it’s a very filling meal – in fact, you will take half of the sandwich home to finish later!
I returned to Manny’s and tried the greatest deli dish of all time:
Pastrami On Rye With Potato Salad And Pickle!
Yes, this is the one to judge a deli by – and it begins with the pastrami, which has to be juicy in the center but crunchy on the edges – like this:
What a sandwich!
Again,, you will take half of it home, but you will want to eat this again so it’s a “win win!”
I slathered it with some brown mustard and let me tell you, it’s bite after bite of heaven… have shared other iconic bites in Chicago:
Bite Into A “Cheezborger!”
his is the iconic “cheezborger” from The Billy Goat Tavern, made famous by John Blushi and Dan Aykroyd on “Saturday Night Live!”
See what makes it so unique and delicious by clicking on my story here:
I love both Manny’s Deli and Billy Goat Tavern – a ton of fun if you are in Chicago!
And if you are in New York:
The Minetta Tavern in New York has a magnificent burger and you can see why b y clicking on my story here:
Stacked burgers seem to be my thing…caase in point:

Well now I’m on a burger roll so to speak, so let’s get dipping!
Yes, the cheese on this burger goes on the outside!
