Have You Ever “Doubled Down” at KFC?

This is one of the greatest “food mashups”, thanks to KFC, which not only excels in the world of fried chicken, but has a history of doing fun food creations like this…more in a moment, but first: it all began when the wizards at KFC created this:

The Origin Of The “Double Down!”

Let’s go back a few years – KFC introduced their legendary “Double Down” Sandwich: It was a wacky food item that everyone tried once: I know because I had 50 of them delivered to my TV staff once!

Why Is It Called A “Double Down?”

Easy: instead of two buns, they use two pieces of fried chicken!

It doesn’t seem that long ago when KFC stunned the food world with their “double down” sandwich: bacon, cheese and creamy sauce stuffed between two pieces of boneless breaded fried chicken, acting as “buns”.

Quickly, websites like “insanewiches” did their “homage” by double sizing their double down like this…

KFC used the publicity for their creation to come up with another use for the “breaded fried chicken as bun” concept – this time shaping the chicken a certain way to be used for a hot dog!

It’s KFC’s “Double Down Hot Dog!”

KFC offered a special “Double Down Dog,” covered in cheese and special sauce. This variation of the Double Down was introduced by KFC in the Philippines and was available for a limited time at select locations.

And it was a massive hit!

That’s right: the “Double Down Dog” sold out everywhere!

KFC brought it back again, extending their test to more countries around the world…it’s a unique take to be sure!

And KFC hasn’t just abused the hot dog, look at what they were offering overseas once as well:

The “Double Down KING Burger!”

Now, we already know that the “Double Down” is two pieces of fried chicken, bacon and cheese – but in Korea, they had an addition which they called the “Zinger”: a hamburger patty!

So why hasn’t KFC rolled these out worldwide, or made them a permanent fixture? Who knows, but they continue to play around with their food in fun ways!

They aren’t the only ones who like to have fun with a hot dog…I went to Seoul South Korea and saw them served like this!

Yes, they were wrapped in bacon, slathered with zesty sauce, and sold on a stick! Here is video I shot of Seoul’s terrific street food:

See more of their terrific food scene here!

One thing I did with a hot dog once was this…enjoy!

Yes, I mad shot dogs empaled on spaghetti! It’s just one way to have more fun with your food..see more here, plus an look at how to make them!

  1. wow, that is one mighty combo! I’ve never had one, don’t know that I could do it justice –

  2. The last time I ate anything from a KFC was in 1999. I ordered a chicken burger and fries from a KFC in Paddington, London, and asked for ‘No mayonnaise’. It came covered in mayonnaise, which I had to scrape off using a paper napkin, and I have never had anything from there since.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Never seen it before, but it loks interesting!

  4. What a blast from the fast food past! The Double Down Dog was a wild idea that somehow worked—because KFC dared to go big and bold. Thanks for the nostalgic ride and global food mashups; it’s a reminder that food can be playful, outrageous, and unforgettable all at once!
