“We got no food, we got no jobs… our PETS’ HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!“
With that, I am excited Jim Carrey’s 63rd birthday – which was January 17 – with a look at one of his funniest films, that just happens to be filled with food!
This edition of “Bite! Eat! Repeat” takes you on a hilariously delicious trip through cinema, honoring Jim Carrey and all of the laughs he has given us, while also focusing on the use of food for comedic purposes in “Dumb & Dumber!”
Behold Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey having a VERY HARD TIME with their meal – it’s a scene from one of the funniest comedies ever – which is so much more, because the 1994 smash hit film “Dumb & Dumber” was a food-laden comedy hit!
Time To Bite Down On More Jim Carrey!
Besides being a huge hit, “Dumb & Dumber” also raised a “toothy” question: Jim Carrey was already a big star when the film came out, so everyone wondered about the chipped tooth he had in the film – was it a special effect?
The Chipped Tooth Was Real!
Yes, that’s his real tooth! In fact, years before the film, Carrey had chipped his tooth and had it capped, but had the cap removed for the film to make his character look more deranged!
Mission accomplished!
A Tasty Comedy!
It’s time to take a look at the original film, through the lens of food!
The plot of “Dumb & Dumber” was simple: a pair of dumb friends named Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas set out on a cross country trip to return a briefcase full of money to its rightful owner, a beautiful woman named Mary Swanson.

However, the duo are unaware of a bigger conspiracy involving Mary and the briefcase, and a pair of criminals involved in the conspiracy attempt to chase Harry and Lloyd down for the briefcase – and throughout the chase, there are sequences with food!
In one scene, Jim Carrey has a fantasy he will be dining with a beautiful woman …and here is how he handles “disruptions” from the horny Waiter and angry Chef:
“Hot! Hot! Hot!”
Without knowing it, Harry and Lloyd get rid of a hired killer, who is tracking them. Here is the infamous “hot pepper” scene from the diner, when the hired killer gets a little more “sauce” than he bargained for!
There are many references to food in the film dialogue as well:
Lloyd Christmas: All we need to do is show a little class, a little sophistication, and we’re in like a dirty shirt.
Harry Dunne: No problem, Lloyd. We can be classy and sophistic… Oh, check out the funbags on that hosehound.
Lloyd Christmas: I’d like to eat her liver with some fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti.
There were many funny moments as the duo travelled across the country. Here is one hilarious diner scene, beginning with the “soup du jour”…
Bravo to “Dumb & Dumber” for not only being a goofy, funny film – but for stuffing it to the gills with food!

Hi John, a lovely discussion about this movies. I have watched it a few times.
I love the food throughout…it reminds me of Brad Pitt in “Oceans Eleven” – he is holding or eating food in virtually every scene he is in…love that idea!

This is great! Only you would think up an homage to Jim Carey! It’s funny to me because I love Jeff Daniels – he’s such a good actor! I think my favorite scene ever with food was in Big, with Tom Hanks, when he went to the toy company Christmas party and tried caviar!!!!
I loved this film and I forgot what a huge role that food played in it
I never got through that film at the time, John. The silliness got too much for me, and I think it worked better for Americans for some reason. I had to turn it off.
