$6K Tuna And Breakfast Sushi Too! Tokyo’s Iconic Tsukiji Fish Market Close Up!

Welcome To Tokyo’s Iconic Tsukiji Fish Market…

The world’s largest fish market is in Tokyo – the “Tsukiji” Market is one of the most fascinating places I have visited – here is what it’s like to wander through it at 7am…

The historic inner wholesale fish market and famous tuna auctions moved to Toyosu Market in October 2018, but the vibrant Tsukiji Outer Market remains open as a bustling, multi-block open-air food district in central Tokyo.

You can literally wander the aisles for hours!

The market is bustling all night long, but visitors are allowed in after most of the fish has been sent out to restaurants around the world…just be careful where you walk!

Here’s my wife Alex checking out the seafood on display:

The Tsukiji fish market opened in 1935 and is one of Tokyo’s most popular spots for tourists to observe the tuna auctions early each morning. These huge sides of Tuna would auction off for as much as $6,000 each!

I used to run programming for the G4 TV network. In 2010, I took a team to Tokyo’s legendary market, led by our terrific Host Morgan Webb….and this is what it looks like to film at the fish market – here is some behind-the-scenes of Morgan watching them cut a six thousand dollar side of tuna:

Morgan had the chance to participate in the cutting of a giant tuna – in half! That’s Corrado, Takeshi, along with Kristen and Vinny, all working hard to bring this story him to our viewers…first, you give Morgan a sword AS LONG AS HER ENTIRE BODY!

Morgan’s $6,000 Slice Of Tuna!

Morgan spent time watching the fishmongers do their job – as this was a real cut she was going to make:

She sliced the fish in two, then stepped aside to allow the pros to finish the job:

There are over 460 retail shops surrounding the market, with knife and kitchenware vendors, plus terrific food stalls serving fresh sushi, sashimi rice bowls (kaisendon), flame-grilled seafood, and sweet rolled omelettes (tamagoyaki).

I was lucky enough to travel to Tokyo four times for work.

My wife Alex and son Jeff joined me there one year – and we have plans to go back as well

When Alex, Jeff and I were in Tokyo we ate all kinds of wild food, like sushi for breakfast here at the market! Here’s a look!

There is so much to love about Tokyo, like the time Alex and I had “lunch, and the Chefs did this after serving us our meal:”Aye”, the seasonal fish that is a delicacy!

We ate it so many times in so many unique ways…here’s a look!

As much as we loved our “grilled Ayu” experience, it was just one of many magical Tokyo food adventures…

Alex and her musical bento box

We ate Bento boxes, that were served by the Chefs who then proceeded to perform a musical set for us!

Tokyo is a city where every meal is memorable…like these eel bowls – served on the top floor of a department store!

Most stores have restaurants on the top floors, serving all kinds of great food – you can see more of our eel adventure here:

And I eat as much Japan-inspired food at home as well, like this:

It’s “kaisendon!” Click here to see why they stack it sky high – and why I did it at home as well!

A bit more food and fun from Tokyo: you see my son befriended a Musician who worked in a bar and he played an original song for us!

This “Golden Gai” entertainment area is so much fun – see why by clicking on my story here!
