I Got “Smashed!” Their “Big Schmacc” Homage To The “Big Mac” Delivers The Goods!

This is a classic smashburger. Two smashed patties, cheese, lots of pickles and sauce.

And this is a classic McDonald’s “Big Mac”:

You know the recipe – we all know the recipe:

“Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed roll.”

McDonald’s sells more than 500 million Big Macs every year in the US and almost a billion worldwide.

Why am I telling you this? Because I just had my THIRD smash burger that was an homage to the iconic McD’s sandwich!

My latest food adventure began on New York’s lower east side:

The New Yorker magazine reviewed the burger restaurant Smashed and called it the best smash burger in New York City…so I had to head inside and taste for myself.

As soon as you enter, you are greeted by their definition of a smash burger:

I have been trying unique burgers all across America – and came across a funny trend: the “Big Mac” Homage! The latest example was here on the “Smashed” menu board:

Time To Bite Down On “The Big Schmacc!”

As you can see, along with classic smash burgers – and vegan ones as well – sits the “Big Schmacc” – their take on the iconic McDonald’s sandwich!

Of course I ordered it, and here’s what arrived:

That’s a Big Mac? Well, it sure was – but the “smashed” patties obscured all that was inside! Let me help you get a better view:

There you go: one big bite and the insides are revealed – there’s lots of lettuce as you can see, but there is also the middle bun, sauce, pickles and cheese all there as well – and it was delicious!

There’s no doubt the reason for the popularity of the Big Mac: the special sauce (very much a member of the thousand island dressing family), the cheesy beef, the tart dill pickles and the crisp lettuce all come together perfectly…a delicious sandwich to be sure!

It was a messy delight, but it was really flavorful…bravo to the Smashed team! It was without a doubt one of the most unique burger presentations so far:

By the way, Smashed has a number of other burger options as well:

The Oklahoma burger is when they put freshly sliced onions on top of the meat before “smashing it”, and when you flip it over, the onion caramelizes underneath! Here’s what it looked like as they cooked them at Hamburger America:

George Motz, Author of the definitive book about burgers – “Hamburger America” – was cooking the day I was there! The caramelized onions really soak up the meaty flavor of the burger and it results in a real bite of heaven:

Hamburger America in New York really knows how to make a great burger, but they aren’t alone!

I mentioned all of the Big Mac tributes I’ve come across, and Chicago showed off its own as well:

This is the “Big Mack Daddy!” Click here to see where they make this monster!

I came across a Big Mac tribute in Los Angeles as well! This is, without a doubt, the messiest burger I’ve ever eaten!

So, that is indeed a tribute to the Big Mac – so how did it taste?

Here’s my review!

Of course, I shared with you my own personal Big Mac mashup:

That’s a Filet-o-Fish sitting atop a Big Mac – how did this mashup taste?

See my review here!

And one more Big Mac moment: remember when one guy set the record for most Big Macs eaten?

  1. I would definitely try one of those. Sometimes ‘messy’ is good!

    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. These look good! The last time I bought a Big Mac, the size had shrunk. They should’ve renamed it the Midget Mac.
