Mushroom Ketchup! Banana Ketchup! Wild Condiment Recipes From The “Cook And Drink” Chefs!

What Kind Of Ketchup Do You Love?

There was a lot of social media attention paid a few years back when Heinz began offering up all sorts of unique ketchup flavors, but they all have one thing in common: a tomato is the star!

Well, thanks to the great Chefs Michiel and Jeen, not anymore!

Behold “Mushroom” Ketchup!

I love reading Michiel and Jeen’s “Cook And Drink” blog because they always have terrific recipes like this one, for “mushroom” ketchup!

As they write:

“It seems that mushroom ketchup originated in the UK and that it could be considered the original ketchup. It was used to flavour soups, marinades and meat dishes. The first reference we could find is from 1818 in a book called Apicius redivivus, the Cook’s Oracle by William Kitchiner (pages 475-477). The catsup is made by fermenting mushrooms with salt. Black pepper, allspice and brandy are the other ingredients.”

I have to try this and you can to – click here for their recipe and much more terrific insight!

I had planned to share a previous post they had as well about another really unique ketchup:

Banana Ketchup!

This one really sounds interesting! As they wrote:

“The Banana Ketchup is smooth, its taste long, tangy, spicy and uplifting. The bananas give the ketchup natural sweetness and depth. They also support the spices. A condiment to love.”

I am sharing their recipe for that as well and I vow to make this in the next few weeks!

It reminded me of the story I shared about Chef Nigella Lawson and how she cooks with banana skins!

See what she makes here!

As a lover of condiments, I am always looking for new variations – like this incredible sauce for burgers!

Some of you know that I am a big fan of Hamburger America, and this “secret olive sauce” condiment blend was a smash hit!

I ate it, make it now all the time, and you can see why by clicking on my story here:

Now some of you think I go too far at times, like when I shared this condiment:

Yes, they are “Mayonnaise Slices!”

Click here to see for yourself – I dare you!

Bravo Michiel and Jeen for your great recipes!

  1. Very interesting! I’ll have to keep an eye out for these varieties!!!

  2. I’ll be looking for this

  3. The idea of mushroom ketchup makes me happy indeed!

  4. Well, my next stop will be to ask Mr Google which ketchups by Heinz are for sale in Australia! Don’t think we have all of them? Have had plenty of mushroom ketchup but the banana one is new! Banana peels – marvellous cheap and healthy face ‘cream’, using ripe fruit, whether you believe it or not 🙂 !

    • Interested, have gone asking about Heinz ketchup varieties > nope, not the ones you have shown > we have an ‘organic’ variety of the tomato one and a ‘low salt & sugar’ one being increasingly health conscious in this country . . .

  5. I don’t actually like tomato ketchup, I find it very sweet and sickly. I have never tried mushroom or banana ketchup, but I would probably like them as I like mushrooms and bananas. In the UK, we have something called ‘Brown Sauce’, which I have never seen anywhere else. It is tangy, and very different to tomato ketchup. Great on sausage or bacon sandwiches. The leading brands are HP, and Daddies. We usually have Daddies.
