Why Is Nonna “Angry?” Is “Mama’s Too” New York’s Greatest Pizza? Let’s Wait In Line To Find Out!

Just How Angry Is “Nonna?”

Well, if you add hot soppressata AND hot honey to a pizza, the answer is: “VERY angry!”

It’s just one reason at Mamas’ Too! is considered one of New York City’s best slices of pizza!

As The Infatuation noted in their review:

This is a tiny spot on the Upper West Side, and it makes some of the best pizza within walking distance of Central Park. The main attraction here is the square slice covered in thick little pieces of pepperoni, the edges of which reach toward the sky as if thanking the pizza gods for making them so delicious. It’s crunchy on the bottom and crispy around edges, with a sweet and garlicky sauce under what would seem like an excessive amount of melted mozzarella, if melted mozzarella weren’t such an objectively desirable food.

With that description in mind, I walked 44 blocks up Broadway to 106th to see just how “angry” Nonna was!

The first thing you will see when you arrive is a line…a consistent, long line outside the door and down the sidewalk…still, it was under fifteen minutes before I was inside:

The pizza is on the right, in front of the ovens that are constantly opening and closing with more pies….the menu sits right in front of the cash register on the right:

“We Recommend Them ALL Pal!”

I love that message! As the sign says, they are all terrific, it’s just a matter of what you want that day! And it’s fair to say that EVERYONE wants this!

The “Angry Nonna!”

This is the one that Grandma makes! Soppressata is a type of Italian dry-cured pork sausage, with a slightly spicy taste and coarse texture. It’s a staple in Southern Italy, and Grandma adds housemate hot honey – it’s an iconic square of goodness! And look what’s right above it!

Fried Chicken Pizza Too!

Yep, you can also get some beer battered fried chicken on your pizza with so much more as well…all deliciously unique and delicious!

Here’s a look at some of them:

There are always up to a dozen different pies to choose from: some are traditionally round, but more often are sold as rectangular pieces from a sheet pan…

I love fennel sausage, and Mama’s is packed with rich flavor – some whipped ricotta adds a creamy touch to the mozzarella- and it’s also served as a square with a deep, chewy crust.

After placing my order, I stepped away from the pizzas to wait – those are the pizza ovens on the left behind the counter, heating up everyone’s slices and cooking new pies as well…

While waiting for my order, I watched the pizza chefs making pie after pie after pie to my left…it never slows down!

After 5-6 minutes, my slice was ready, so let’s take a look:

So…Just How Angry Was Nonna?

She was furious – in the best way! This absolutely delicious pizza was crusty around the edges but chewy inside – and the soppressata was spicy – coated with a hot honey sauce for some sweet kick at the end – one piece will fill you up!

Mama’s Too! is worth the wait, the prices are very reasonable, the pizza delicious and filling and guess what? They have something else they serve as well!

In part two of my review coming next week, I will surprise you with a completely different choice I made for a meal! Don’t even try to guess what’s in the bag!

Now, about the “best pizza in New York” question: there are many top ten lists, and Mama’s Too! sits comfortably on them…as does “L’Industrie:

This place is widely acclaimed, as are Prince Street Pizza, Bleeker Street Pizza and more:

Bleeker Street Pizza exemplifies the wealth of great pizza in New York…here’s what sits behind their glass case waited to be heated for you:

And for first time New Yorkers, you will see 99 cent slices everywhere, as well as this New York legend:

Yes, I reviewed Ray’s – but which is really the “famous original?” Click here for that wild story!

I also like to make pizza at home – we all do, right? And one night I had a very unique effort!

  1. This sounds a bit hot for me. I’d probably chose another option.

  2. Great blog, John! I have been craving pizza, might have to do one at home on Friday. Want to try it on the grill, have you ever done one on a grill?

  3. Oh what a hugely fun read – and, I would definitely love being back in New York trying this! Looks great and I love all the flavours even if they necessarily are not quite the traditional pizza. I wonder what Italians domiciled in Italy would say . . . 🙂 !
