Did You Know Sailors Created Avocado Toast? Here Are Fun Avocado Facts – And Three Great Recipes!

Who Loves Avocados? I DO!

It’s one of the healthiest and more versatile fruits there is – yes, it’s a FRUIT!

Avocados are one of the few fruits that contain healthy unsaturated fats.

They’re rich in nutrients that are often lacking in many people’s diets, including magnesium, B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, and folate.

For example, half of an avocado packs 10% of the DV for potassium – which we all really need and never get enough of!

While many of us know it only as the base for Guacamole, the mighty Avocado has so many other reasons to celebrate it:

For example, the Avocado is packed with so many healthy benefits!

Avocados are great for your heart, for your vision, for weight loss – and even help against cancer! Yes, this adorable green fruit has amazing health benefits and so much more!

The terrific website “Trees.com” published an appreciation for the Avocado, with some really cool facts::

Did you know?

  • Avocado trees were first cultivated over 5,000 years ago

And what about this? If you thought you were the person behind the current “Avocado Toast” trend, think again!

Thank A Sailor Time!

  • European sailors were the first to start the avocado toast trend! They would spread it on a piece of bread – who knew? That has led us to an incredible upsurge in Avocado Toast recipes and toppings – really up to you, but I love eggs and a sprinkle of cheese!
  • Growing them helps balance the nitrates in the soil, which makes the soil more fertile for other plants

But even better – they taste amazing – especially as the greatest dip of all time: Guacamole!

Your Homemade Guacamole Recipe!

It’s the perfect dip to go with chips, crackers, breadsticks or even a finger! It’s easy and delicious to make – here’s just one of many Guacamole recipes to try:

  • 3 avocados – peeled, pitted, and mashed
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup diced onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 roma (plum) tomatoes, diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper (Optional)

The folks at Trees.com were excited to share this information and I was happy to oblige!

I personally love to stuff an Avocado with all sorts of stuff – let your mind run wild and don’t worry, there are plenty of Avocados for all of us!

In the United States, California is the top producer of avocados and home to more than 5,000 avocado farms, which generate over 400 million pounds of avocados each year!

Here’s a great recipe for “Shrimp-Stuffed Avocados from the website “Healthy Fitness Meals!”

  • ▢ 1 medium to large ripe avocadohalved and pit removed
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ▢ 7 ounces of peeled and deveined small or medium shrimp

  • ▢ 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • ▢ 1/4 cup finely chopped seeded tomato
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon cilantro leaves
  • ▢ salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized pan over medium-high heat. Season the shrimp with chili powder and salt to taste, then add them to the pan.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally, for approximately 3 minutes, or until shrimp and pink and opaque.
  • Pour the lime juice over the shrimp, toss to coat.
  • Season the avocado halves with salt and pepper.

  1. Fascinating! I just like my avocados as is. Mostly in salads. The one thing I haven’t done is fry them or bake them in some way. It just doesn’t appeal to me to have a hot avocado!

  2. I’ve never met an avocado that I didn’t like! love guacamole, and avocado toast, and everything else with it used as an ingredient. here’s to the sailors!

  3. I too love avocado and I always feel good after I eat one. Thanks for the recipes.

  4. I really enjoy avocado, it is so tasty and filling

    • Yes, and for a while the fat content was considered bad – until they realized it was the best fat for you! Avocados contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are considered “good fats”. These fats can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

  5. Fabulous! I love avocados! Great to hear how good they are for you! I’ll pick some up today! 🙂

  6. Love it! Years ago I lived in the middle of a persimmon grove that also had two giant avocado trees. I was heavenly 🥑

    • We’ve never tried to grow one of the trees but I have learned this: in LA you have fresh fruit and vegetables at all times…in New York the avocados are either rock hard and unripe or mush…I have learned to buy them a week before I need them and keep a very close eye on when they ripen!

  7. Thanks for the back story on avocado toast. Our granddaughter is an avocado addict and would love that Tiramisu.

  8. I can’t eat them, John. The slimy texture is too much for my taste!

    Best wishes, Pete.
