Leftover White Rice! Don’t Dump It – Dress It Up! A “Food Waste” Story…

Leftover Rice – Toss It?

Or, turn it into delicious leftovers, which is what Dorothy did at her terrific website “The New Vintage Kitchen!”

Dorothy shared some powerful and important facts about food waste like this:

A billion meals a day are wasted on this planet, and not just from rich countries. 19% on the consumer level, and another 13% pre-consumer translates to over a third of the food produced going to waste.

A third of our food goes to waste – we need to do so much better! Dorothy tackles something we all know: leftover white rice in a Chinese food container…mostly we dump it – contributing to food waste!

Dorothy also wrote this:

Then there’s that mostly full container of extra white rice from the Chinese takeout on Friday night. How many times have we waited until it turned to a solid rock before tossing? If you have this rice left over, put it in a sealed container rather than keep it in the carton, it will keep longer, and look like real food to use up rather than something sad not eaten from a takeout meal.

And she shares some terrific recipes that allow the rice to shine – see her post here:

Bravo, Dorothy – food waste is such an important topic…our planet gives us enough food to feed the world, so let’s not waste it….

Remember when I had 14 styrofoam containers leftover? Here’s what I did with it:

And I also had some leftover pizza and discovered a different way to re-use it…see that recipe here:

  1. Thanks for posting the link to my article John! It’s such an important issue globally, especially with all those who are going to bed hungry.
Love you leftovers adventures! You definitely lived up to the challenge!

  2. I so agree with this. We always eat the white rice the next day either as a rice pudding which hubby loves, or in a stir fry. There is so much you can do with it. I never throw food away.

  3. Looks tasty. It’s always good to get new ideas to help with the food waste

  4. Hi John, this is all good advice. I love rice so we always keep leftovers.

  5. I love using leftovers in new recipes- thanks for this!
