New York’s Great Pizza Joint Also Serves WHAT!?!?! My Cheesesteak Surprise From “Angry Nonna!”!

Remember “Angry Nonna?” Well, She’s Back!

Living in New York, there is incredible pizza everywhere you look. Recently, I shared a story about some of New York’s best pizza joints, including Mama’s Too!

As you can see, there is a massive display of unique pies of all shapes, sizes, and most importantly, toppings!

Here’s a closer look:

But their most famous is the “Angry Nonna”, which takes fiery pepperoni cups and drizzles them with hot honey!

When I shared my review, I admitted that it was actually my SECOND time to the restaurant, because I went there the first time for an entirely different reason – and here it is!

A Cheesesteak!

Yes, I went to a pizza joint for one of the most iconic sandwiches – the cheesesteak! I read an article about the best ones in New York and was surprised to find it here…since Philly has the reputation for them:

Here’s the official definition: A cheesesteak is a sandwich made with thinly sliced beefsteak and melted cheese on a long roll, originating in Philadelphia. While there are regional and personal variations, the key components are the meat, cheese, and bread.

And they make them at Mama’s Too on 105th and Broadway on New York’s upper west side!

There I am, holding my sandwich! I waited in line for only a few minutes when I stepped up and blurted out: “I’ll take a Philly Cheesesteak!”

Without missing a beat the young cashier replied:

“That’s one CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH?” THE WORD “PHILADELPHIA” WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND AND I REALIZED MY HUGE FAUX PAS…THESE TWO CITIES FIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!

I replied quickly and moved away, ashamed. The sandwich took about ten minutes, and then I took it home…let’s take a look as I take it out of that bag:

Well, that’s a delicious looking sandwich! Let take a closer look:

Well, it glistened with a bit of grilled onion oiliness and it smelled terrific.

The next thing to do was to look inside! Here we go:

As you can see, the cheese permeates the meat, and the grilled onion seem to be around the outside…gooey and once again, smelling delicious!

Now, time to “bite eat and repeat!”

As you saw, I loved it! I will note again that I barely finished half of it, so at just under $20, that was good for two meals!

I loved this sandwich, and I plan to try many others in town to see who stands up to this one!

Of course, I will also go back to Mamas Too! for this!

So many unique slices to try! Here’s my full review of “Angry Nonna!”

Mamas Too! is terrific, but this slice from Bleeker Street Pizza exemplifies the wealth of great pizza in New York…here’s what sits behind their glass case waited to be heated for you:

And for first time New Yorkers, you will see 99 cent slices everywhere, as well as this New York legend:

Yes, I reviewed Ray’s – but which is really the “famous original?” Click here for that wild story!

Back to the cheesesteak, I saw a story that said Philly has Cheesesteaks while New York has “Chopped Cheese” – and what are those? Let’s have a listen:

It’s the sound the cook makes as he makes this iconic sandwich…see my first time trying it here!

Speaking of sandwiches, what about one of New York’s oldest?

Yep, this is one of the oldest foods in New Yori!” See what it is and where I got it by clicking on my story here!

I am sharing and storing all of these recipes on my food website “Bite! Eat! Repeat!” – it’s your site for all things food – if you like what you see, please click on my link and follow this blog as well!
