“The best cheese steak in the area might well come from New Jersey.”
– Anthony Bourdain
Those seem like fighting words, but there is no doubt that iconic Philly cheesesteaks have some delicious competition from the next state over!
Welcome To Donkeys Place!
Welcome to Camden, New Jersey – home of the Cheesesteak Sandwich that Bourdain waxed so poetically about – this great restaurant /bar has gained a reputation for making a Philly cheesesteak that can stand up to the best of them – and it was time for me to see for myself!
Time To Make It Myself!
My son shipped me the ingredients and instructions for me to make my own Donkey’s Place Cheesesteak – what a great surprise!
Thanks to Goldbelly for making all of these regional treats available across the country! The kit arrives packed with ice bags to stay fresh – and with easy to follow instructions: so let’s get cooking!
Here’s what you unpack for your cooking adventure: individually portions meat, plus a big block of pre-sliced cheese, grilled onions, kaiser rolls and sweet peppers!
Yes, the Kaiser Rolls are MASSIVE!
It was time to heat up the onions and steak in a frying pan:
After bringing these incredible smelling ingredients back to life, it was time to add some cheese!
I also put the Kaiser Roll in the microwave with a slice of cheese on the bottom to give the Roll a bit of warmth – you could do it in the oven of course as well:
After letting the cheese melt a bit, it’s time to assemble the burger – oh, and they give you LOTS of cheese, so you can load it up even more!
(Confession: I did just that on my next one!)
My Donkey’s Place Cheesesteak!
These are so easy to make, and it smells so good when you are cooking it. Once it’s ready, you just assemble!
And there it is: piled high with goodness! And just how big was it?
Yes, it’s a BIG sandwich!
The roll is soft inside with just a hint of crustiness – the meal is rich with flavor and the onions are incredible – the highlight of the sandwich. The cheese gives it a melty goodness and while I don’t usually eat sweet peppers, they added a really nice kick!
My won Jeff had already told me about one of LA’s best submarine sandwiches:
So I headed there to check that out as well!
Here’s my review:
And of course, whenever “national sandwich day” comes around I share some of my favorites, like this “bathed bread”:
Clcik here to see why this iconic provencal sandwich is called that!
I just shared this sandwich – which is one of the most delicious I have ever tasted:
I will never look at bologna the same way again!

Wow thats certainly some sandwich, John… It would last me a week😂 but I know a young man who would love it!
It was definitely more than one serving Carol! Thanks for the comment!
They send you a LOT! One of those would easily serve as a main meal. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Indeed Pete, I ate half and reheated the other part the next day! Cheers!
I love that they shipped it and you could heat it and put it together warm
