England’s “Supersized Sandwiches” Are Taking Over! Make Way For The “Mondo Sandos!”

Hungry? Head To England For “Super Sandwiches!”

When I saw the headline, I knew I had to investigate: The Guardian news site reported on “super sandwiches” that are taking over England!

According to an article I found, this trend has spread all across that country – with recipes that pack unique ingredients between two slices of bread or between a cut roll…and the results sound delicious!

Let me take a moment to tell everyone this story is not promoting wasteful food habits….these sandwiches are to share or to eat over several days – NEVER WASTE FOOD!

The sandwich above comes from Mondo Sando. As The Guardian reported on some of their unique bites:

At Mondo Sando in Camberwell, south London, its chewy white baguettes feature layers of salami, capicola squeezed between mozzarella and hot peppers…

The story continues:

“while one of the most popular sandwiches at Alby’s in Southside, Edinburgh, features chunks of battered chicken thighs covered in crispy onions and wedged between doorstep slices.

Elsewhere, The Bear’s Matty Matheson’s forthcoming cookbook includes recipes for precipitous pork sandos and French dip rolls.”

Edd Watkinson who runs the Big Deal’s Bodega in Norwich, which sells giant sarnies featuring everything from peaches to samosas, says the key to the gargantuan trend is “providing customers with a sandwich that’s so far removed from a sandwich they’d make themself at home”.

“The sandwich is on an upward trajectory,” says Max Halley, who 10 years ago quit his job as a chef in a Michelin-starred restaurant to open Max’s Sandwich Shop in north London. Current bestsellers on Halley’s menu include ham, egg ’n’ chips and goat tikka masala with a gravy mayonnaise. Halley says they are “a meal” rather than “a convenient snack”.

This story is just another reason I love the reporting at The Guardian, who took the time to educate me on when sandwiches were created!

Here’s what they wrote:

“the sandwich’s origins, which are credited to John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. In 1762 during a game of cards at a private member’s club in London, Montagu is said to have ordered “a bit of beef between two slices of toasted bread” so that he could eat it with his hands and not leave the gaming table. By the mid-19th century, ham sandwich street vendors were popular in London and in 1980 M&S introduced packaged versions.” Now with many workers taking a hybrid approach to the office, the sad supermarket sandwich, often seen as an emblem of busyness, is facing some sizeable competition.”

Here’s also what I came across when researching the story:

England’s Largest Sandwich!

Got 22 euros – and a very large appetite? Well, once again bring some friends and dive into this big boy!

The Corner Kitchen in South Yorkshire, created a sandwich that is so large it weighs six pounds – and you’ll need a bottomless stomach to polish it off! Feast your eyes on the UK’s latest culinary titan, a breakfast sandwich so immense it could cure even the most stubborn of hangovers.

OK, I say grab 4 or 5 friends and have a feast! Remember when I shared the story of an English sandwich that caused a huge controversy?

You see, the controversy was over the price tag – 28 euros~! See the reaction from Londoners here:

I also shared Nova Scotia’s “Donair”, a unique dish that is for an entire family!

I’d love to try this – with a table of fellow food fanatics…see the recipe here!

  1. ha! I never realized the ear of sandwich was a real thing! Those are good looking sandwiches, except for the English breakfast one… I’d much rather have a a LOT of goodies in between two slices of bread!

  2. Well, those are some sandwiches and I”m always wondering how small a slice one would have to make to get every bit in a bite!

  3. I’m going to need a bigger mouth…….)

  4. News to me, but the closest one to me that you mention is in Norwich, 20 miles from Beetley. So the next time I am in the city I will try to find it.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, it was in The Guardian so it seemed sourced enough to have some truth to it – again, love a sandwich that can be lunch for three days!

      • Oh, I’m sure it’s 100% true. But because I live in a rural village like Beetley, I’m out of the loop on food trends. 😊

      • I’ve gotten comments in the past when discussing food trends that seem wasteful so I am trying to share stories that do promote that – but the fact is that larger portions are everywhere now and that can lead to waste – I say eat it for three meals and make it a bargain!
