Have You Seen The “Hamdog?”
If you love hamburgers – AND if you love hot dogs too – well, then it’s time to bite down hard on this:
Yes, it’s a “Hamden” – a really cool food mashup of hamburger and hot dog with a special bun – and it’s been in Australia for years!
Inventor Mark Murray said he had the idea back in 2004 while vacationing with his wife in Nashville. The inspiration came as he coulnt’ decide which one to order, so he ordered both!
“I grabbed a burger and a hot dog as I was really hungry. I was sitting in the car eating them both at the same time and my wife was looking at me like I was an idiot,” Mark Murray told CNBC.
Murray, who lives in Perth, Australia, took his idea to the Australian “Shark Tank” show, only to be rejected by investors! Well, that got him fired up to do something about it!
The subsequent social media attention caused the product to “pretty much explode worldwide,” Murray told CNBC at the time, and nothing has changed since!
The hamdog sells for $8 at fairs in Australia – and here is the recipe that shows just how easy it can be to make:
Make a very unique bun and add the beef patty – with space cut out for the hot dog – then load it up with lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise.
Boom! Watch them put one together:
The “Patented” and “Trademarked” combination hamburger & hotdog has now been launched globally after years under wraps. Here is their website:
As you can see, it’s a phenomenon in Australia, and why not? It truly is the best of both worlds!
The most amazing thing about the hamdog might be how it’s made.
“At the moment there is a fair bit of labor involved in making the buns because they’re made by people, not machines,” Murray told News.com.au. “We’re still developing a way to semi automate production.”
Many folks have mashed up a burger and a hot dog, but this is the first time I’ve seen a specially created bun for it!
Now, speaking of wacky mashups:
Pickles meet cookies – what could go wrong?

I also shared this look at a hot dog that is wrapped in bacon and cooked on the street – just one of many really cool “Seoul food” bites to try!

Now, for lovers of all food mashups, let’s not forget this:
Remember this “hot dog pizza”? Now that’s a mashup you can fall in love with! Check it out here:
Finally, sometimes the best mashup is between food and drink!

I am sharing and storing all of these recipes on my food website “Bite! Eat! Repeat!” – it’s your site for all things food – if you like what you see, please click on my link and follow this blog as well!

Hi John. The bun looks like an aeroplane. Funny idea 🙃
Thank you for reading!
ohhhhh my! Very interesting! I couldn’t do it cause I like my hamburgers on the rare side and I only eat really good wursts!
And as that picture shows, the is NOT a “really good wurst!” Thanks for commenting, much appreciated!
I’d try it, and if nothing else, I’m fascinated by the innovative bun design. p.s. I’m heading to Portugal this summer and remember your posts about the country. are there any highlights you recommend that I don’t want to miss? off the beaten path is good, or something in the major cities?
That sounds fun! Cascais is the seaside down that is a day trip from Lisbon. We didn’t rent a car as it’s easy to get around by train or TukTuk in Lison as there are those 7 hills! The magical Pena Palace is a half hour outside Lisbon and a must seee – and must get tickets ahead of time! In town, Cafe Luso is the most famous restaurant with “fado” music, aka the portugese blues….here is link to favorite restaurant if you want to see what they serve and if it’s for you: https://biteeatrepeat.com/2023/01/11/the-wild-food-at-cervejaria-ramiro-in-lisbon-scarlett-shrimp-crab-head-crab-a-steak-sandwich-dessert-johnrieber/

John, the Hamdog has my name written all over it. The perfect combination!
Best wishes, Pete.
