My Wild “Food” Safari! From A Singita Boulders “Boma” To Our “Sundowner” Cocktails!

Welcome To My African Safari!

Is there a more stunning way to see our first “safari sunset?”

This is Singita Sabi Sands in South Africa, where we began our 19 day African adventure – 5 different stops in 3 different countries…I will be sharing stories of our adventures on my regular blog, Johnrieber.com, but since BiteEatRepeat.com is “all food, all the time”, let’s dig in to some of the unique food events I had as part of my journey!

But first, we travelled halfway around the world from New York to Johannesburg South Africa – by way of Paris – for a reason: we were there for this: that’s my wife Alex, with George behind the wheel and Louis in the Guide’s seat of our Safari Jeep…because as soon as we arrived at Singita Boulders resort in Sabi Sands South Africa, we were tracking these incredible beasts:

What a way to begin! Every day, we had a 6a morning safari and a 4p afternoon drive – always animals, animals and more animals! And of course, a “sundowner” event as well!

A Refreshing Safari Sundowner!

For the afternoon safari drive, we always stopped at a beautiful vantage point to watch the sun go down – with libations!

That’s Alex with Louis and George, who laid out a nice array of drinks and snacks as we watched the sunset over South Africa:

Stunning! And on the drive home, they tracked a Leopard as well! Check this out!

What a way to begin our safari adventure! The fun turned to food as soon as we returned to the lodge:

An Opening Night “Boma” Celebration!

A “Boma” on a safari is a traditional African enclosure, often used for dining and social gatherings under the stars. The term “boma” originally referred to a livestock enclosure, but it has evolved to represent a space for communal experiences, particularly around a fire…beginning with a traditional musical performance:

We discovered that local music and culture is vitally important here and we embraced it totally!

After that beautiful welcome, it was time to see what was cooking!

Yes, this outdoor fire pit was filled with meat, chicken and more!

You could feel the heat as you approached the Chefs:

What a way to begin our trip!

Nature at its finest, plus a chance to learn more about South African culture and have a cookout too!

Much more to come, like this:

Yes, they were hot Hippos and they needed to cool off….but our food was just heating up…much more to come!

Here’s a tease I shared of our trip…
