Biting Down On New York’s 7th Street Burger!

My Burger Adventure Began With This Picture…

Why do I love social media? Because I can take a break during a long walk, check emails, and see what people are posting online – and this picture popped up!

Richard Bergfors posted this shot of a burger – and what a burger – he shares tons of great burger pics and reviews on Instagram as “Burgerspotting” – check him out!

Here’s what he posted the other day along with this photo:

“Wow wow wow, this is THE 💣 The bun (Martins) the beef, fantastic! The flavours amazing. My first visit, i will def come back, it’s a (10/10) 💯❤️ “

Well, that meant only one thing – I had to try it myself! So I headed to 7th Street!

In what was a real sign that I needed to try this burger, I saw Richard’s photo while sitting in New York’s Washington Square Park, waiting for a store to open – and it was 3 blocks from the 7th Street burger shop in the West Village!

Starting with their first outlet on 7th street, the mini-chain now has eleven locations in and around New York…I popped into the McDougal Street location after seeing this photo and discovering I was 5 minutes away!

As you can see, this is a narrow space, and a very small menu as well! Still, the number of “to go” bags on the counter made me realize just how popular this “hole in the wall” is!

While Richard clearly ordered a double, I tried a single cheeseburger since it was my first time here.

They told me it would be 7-10 minutes, but five minutes later I was handed a bag with my burger tucked nicely inside – opening the wrapper, here’s what I got:

First, I was pleasantly surprised by the sear on the bun – it gave the soft chewy bun a bit of crunch!

As you can see, the special sauce oozes from the burger – in a good way! It tasted a bit like thousand island but with some different spices as well…the next thing to do was to pick it up and give it a closer look:

While it’s listed as a cheeseburger, it looks somewhat like a “smash burger” – which are hugely popular in New York right now.

A smash burger is a burger that is made by smashing the ground beef onto the grill or griddle with a spatula. Smashing the burger results in a sear on the outside of the meat, which locks in all of the juices and flavor.

Sometimes that method can make the meat too crisp but that wasn’t the case here at all – in fact, the meat was juicy and full of beef flavor. I also loved the thick pickle that is plopped in the middle!

While a double burger would have been great, I really liked the balance of meat, cheese, sauce and pickle here…while it says there are onions on it, they were not as noticeable, perhaps because the sauce is really delicious!

A big “thumbs up” to 7th Street Burger, one of many burgers I’ve had the chance to try here in New York over the past few months – like this one:

This is Minetta Tavern’s legendary “Black Label” burger – and those are caramelized onion sitting atop an incredible blend of aged ground beef – you can see my review by clicking on my story here:

I love burgers as you can see – and all kinds of burgers – and speaking of “smash burgers”:

The “Smash Burger” Taco!

Yes, I saw this advertised and decided to make one at home myself – click here for the recipe – it’s delicious!

I also walked more than 5 miles in New York one day to try a legendary Harlem sandwich:

Behold The “Chop Cheese!”

Want to know what it is and why it is called that?

Here’s a clue:

Yes, the chop chop sound is just one reason this is such a unique sandwich – click here for more!
